Horand von Grafrath, later renamed Hector Linksrhein, was one of the foundation dogs for the German Shepherd Breed and the first dog to be registered with the German registering body, receiving registration number SZ1.
A "registered" German Shepherd bitch named Erika is recorded as one of the foundation bitches for the Chinook breed. The AKC stud book Vol. XXXV, page 351, lists a bitch Erika von Hirtenstamm, AKC # 245524, sire Othello von Edelweiss AKC # 225451, dam Minka von Adlerhorst AKC # 220108. Erika's DOB is recorded as 3/30/1918, her breeder/owner as J.J. Barnard, Litchfield, CT. Coat color recorded is light sable, black muzzle.
If the Erika found in Chinook's pedigree was registered with the AKC, it is likely that she is Erika von Hirtenstamm, whose pedigree contains several Seiger and Seigerin, Grand Victor, and Victrices - the German Shepherd Dog national specialty winners of that time. Erika von Hirtenstamm can trace her line back to the great Horand von Grafrath and another influential GSD founder, Beowolf.
